This document focuses on the MÌ©tis. The Indian people were the first people to call Canada home and because of this we call them Native people. In time non-natives arrived from places like France, Ireland, Scotland, and England. They were called Europeans. Almost all of the Europeans who settled in the remote parts of Canada were men. So the first MÌ©tis children often had European fathers and Indian mothers. Today we refer to all persons of mixed White and Indian blood and who are not classified as ÛÏIndiansÛ by the government as MÌ©tis. There are MÌ©tis all over Canada, but it was only the Western MÌ©tis who emerged as a nation of people with a history and culture of their own.
